Cairo, July 27 (IANS/WAM) The Arab Parliament (AP) Sunday condemned the escalation of violence in Libya, warning that the situation threatens Arab national security.

AP President Ahmed Mohammed Al Jarwan demanded that all the involved parties exert joint efforts to preserve territorial integrity and unity of Libya and realise political and security stability.

Al Jarwan affirmed AP's support for Arab diplomatic efforts aimed at preserving unity of Libya and reconcile warring factions.

He called for immediate halt to fighting between armed groups that shed Arab blood.

In the last few days, fighting among rival militias for control of the airport in Tripoli has left at least 50 people dead, extensive damage to airport facilities and planes, and the suspension of all flights to and from the airport.

The UN Security Council last week condemned recent violence in Libya, calling on all sides to engage in political dialogue and refrain from violence which threatens stability.

The United States Saturday closed its embassy in Libya and evacuated the staffers to neighbouring Tunisia amid security concerns in the restive north African country.
