Vadodara, May 6 - Curfew was relaxed for four hours Saturday in this Gujarat city and after five days people thronged the markets, leading to frequent traffic snarls in the central areas.
Vadodara police lifted the curfew in the morning in three police station areas. People rushed to the markets in Raopura and Pani Gate areas, unmindful of the communal violence that claimed at least six lives over the past week after civic authorities demolished a 300-year-old dargah.
The administration also withdrew the army from two areas - Karelibaug and Raopura - though these will remain under curfew.
People were allowed to travel by the road passing through a curfew-bound area connecting Pani Gate and Raopura in the morning. But the heavy flow of traffic resulted in frequent traffic jams.
In view of the heavy traffic, police were compelled to impose curfew strictly in Mandvi and Nyay Mandir areas when a patrolling police convoy, carrying the city police commissioner and the district superintendent, was held up in a traffic jam.
'We sensed that in this manner it would be difficult to control people and decided to stop them from passing through areas under curfew,' said assistant police commissioner V.M. Pargi.
Police didn't allow vehicles to travel through Raopura, which was again under curfew in the afternoon when other areas were given relaxation.
