Raipur, May 6 - A day after a non-bailable warrant was issued against him for allegedly insulting the national flag, Chhattisgarh Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) chief Shiv Pratap Singh Saturday said his political rivals were trying to embarrass him.
A local court in Surguja district issued the warrant against him in a two-decade-old case.
'I am yet to receive the copy of the additional chief judicial magistrate, Surguja district, which issued a non-bailable warrant against me in a case related to insult to national flag dating back to 1985,' Singh told IANS over telephone.
Singh admitted that he repeatedly failed to be present in court to respond in the case. But added: 'Some political opponents of the Congress camp are trying to embarrass me, I never insulted the national flag.'
As per a local Hindi daily, on Jan 26, 1985, some people had lodged the case against Singh at the Bhaiyathan police station in Surguja for 'abusing some people and insulting the national flag'.
At that time, Singh was a BJP worker. He became president of the Chhattisgarh BJP in November 2004.
BJP's senior leaders refused to comment. 'Most of us have no idea at all about the incident, we just came to know about the non-bailable warrant today. We hope the issue will not snowball,' a senior party functionary told IANS.
