Bhopal, May 6 - Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan Saturday won the Budhni assembly seat, defeating his nearest rival Raj Kumar Patel of the Congress by over 36,000 votes.
Chouhan got 66,689 votes as against 30,164 votes bagged by Patel of the Congress party in the by-election held May 3. The counting of votes started began 8 a.m. Saturday.
To remain chief minister, Chouhan had to become a member of the legislative assembly within six months from the date of assuming office. He was sworn in as chief minister Nov 29, 2005.
He is also an MP from Vidisha, under which the Budhni constituency falls.
Nearly 64.60 percent of over 174,000 voters had cast their votes through electronic voting machines (EVMs) installed at 189 booths.
A total of 112,889 voters - 65,944 males and 46,945 females - cast their votes in the election that was once postponed by 10 days due to complaints of violation of code of conduct by the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).

Elaborate security arrangements had been made at the counting centre at the Agriculture Engineering College, Sehore with paramilitary forces deployed to ensure free and fair counting.
