New Delhi, May 6 - Ayub, one of the most wanted criminals of Uttar Pradesh, and four of his accomplices who were gunned down by Delhi Police in a late night encounter were in the capital to carry out robberies in northeast Delhi, police said Saturday.
'The gang had committed 10 cases of dacoity in the area and they were here to carry out further robberies in official and business establishments,' said a top police official.
'Our officers tried to arrest them after a tip off, but the five criminals were shot dead in the ensuing cross fire,' the official added.
Sleuths of the Special Cell killed Ayub and his accomplices after a furious gun battle in the Sonia Vihar area. Police recovered four local made pistols, an ordinance factory revolver and a few cartridges from the killed men.
Ayub has 29 cases of murder, robbery and dacoity registered against him in Delhi and Uttar Pradesh, police said.
