Bhubaneswar, May 6 - At least nine people have died of sunstroke in Orissa in the last one month with the mercury crossing 40 degrees Celsius in some parts of the state, official said Saturday.
Three people died in Angul district and two in Sambalpur in western Orissa, an official of the state revenue control room told IANS.
At least one death each was also reported from the districts of Bolangir, Cuttack, Ganjam and Jagatsinghpur, he said.
The Sundergarh town recorded the highest temperature of 42 degrees Celsius.
The meteorological office Saturday said that rain and thunder showers were likely in some part of the state in the next 24 hours, bringing relief to the people.
In April last year, Jharsuguda recorded 44 degrees.
In May 1998, over 2,000 people died in the state due to a severe heat wave. Titilagarh in Bolangir district recorded the state's highest ever temperature of 50.1 degrees Celsius in June 2003.
