"Over 4,000 hospitals from across India competed for different awards. "

New Delhi, Dec 23 - Minister of State for Health Sudip Bandyopadhyay has urged private players in health care to raise standards of infrastructure to avert incidents like the recent fire tragedy at Kolkata's AMRI Hospital.

Speaking at a health award function Thursday evening, the minister said that private hospitals had become more concerned with making money and were ignoring safety and patients' welfare.

'All that you people are concerned with is wealth. I request you to focus on health first and raise infrastructure to such levels so that tragedies like AMRI can be averted,' Bandyopadhyay said.

'The government has launched many health care programmes to address issues of health care in the country and the programmes like National Rural Heath Mission - is achieving the target,' Bandyopadhyay said, urging health care providers to uplift medical care at the grass roots level.

The minister was speaking at the India Healthcare Awards Thursday evening where P.D. Hinduja Hospital, Mumbai, and the Christian Medical College, Vellore, were awarded the best multi-speciality hospitals of the year at 'India Heathcare Awards 2011' in metro and non-metro categories.

Over 4,000 hospitals from across India competed for different awards.

Delhi's All India Institute of Medical Sciences - also won three awards in three categories for speciality in gastroenterology, paediatrics and neurology.
