"For the power plant at Gonda, the NMDC will have to purchase 640 acres of land. "

Lucknow, Oct 4 - Hoping to meet the growing demand for power, the Uttar Pradesh government is exploring the viability of setting up two new thermal power plants in the state.

Officials of the energy department Wednesday decided to extend full cooperation to Steel Authority of India Limited - and National Mineral Development Corporation - in developing two thermal power generation projects at Jagdishpur and Gonda.

The moment we are convinced that all formalities have been completed for setting up these power plants, the state government will put in every effort at its disposal to facilitate the installation, said Infrastructure and Industrial Development Commissioner - Anil K. Gupta.

It is important to get environmental clearance and coal linkages for the proposed projects, he added.

SAIL is planning to install 2X250 MW coal fired thermal power plant in Jagdishpur.

The project will be executed by the National Thermal Power Corporation and SAIL Power Company - Ltd -, a joint venture of SAIL and NTPC.

NSPCL and NMDC are willing to set up 2X250 MW thermal power generation plant at Gonda.

According to the SAIL proposal, power produced from these power plants will be offered to Uttar Pradesh and, if available, will be utilised for SAIL plants.

Both power projects would require 640 acres of land.

Officials said SAIL already has around 500 acres of land in Jagdishpur in Amethi district and about 140 acres of additional land needs to be arranged.

For the power plant at Gonda, the NMDC will have to purchase 640 acres of land.

The NMDC already has its own coal mines at Shahapur with sufficient coal stocks for generating 250 MW for 25 years.
