New Delhi, Nov 19 - Defending its military action in Gaza as an act of self−defence, Israel Monday drew a parallel between the rocket attacks on Tel Aviv and Jerusalem and the terror attacks on New Delhi and Mumbai.
This is about self−defence. It is about the very basic fundamental right of one million people, Israel's Ambassador to India Alon Ushpiz told reporters on the sidelines of an event here.
In Indian terms, it is more than 170 million people... to lead normal life, to wake up every morning, to go to the work place, and to enable kids to go to school. This is about the capital of Israel. Jerusalem is equivalent to New Delhi. This is about the centre of business of Israel. Tel Aviv is equivalent to Mumbai, he said.
Claiming that in the last seven years, Israel had been targeted by over 12,000 rockets every day, the ambassador said: At the end of the day, it is the duty, responsibility and the right of every UN member to defend its citizen.
On the possibility of a ceasefire, Ushpiz said: Obviously our goal is very defensive goal. We only want to give people the right to conduct normal life... And to damage terrorist infrastructure in the Gaza strip.
If this is taken care of by political negotiations, we, of course, will not object to it. But if it won't happen through peaceful settlements, all kinds - are on the table.
Israel has carried out air strikes in Gaza in the last six days, reportedly killing at least 91 people. Last Wednesday, rockets fired from Gaza had killed three Israelis and injured 50 others, triggering the military offensive from Tel Aviv over Gaza.
