New Delhi, June 15 - Delhi Traffic Police Thursday launched a two-week drive against erring two-wheeler drivers in the wake of 205 drivers and pillion riders losing their lives in accidents in the last five months.
As many as 196 accidents involving two wheelers have taken place this year till May in the which 205 drivers and pillion riders lost their lives and 982 have been injured, say police records.
The records also show that during this period, action has been taken against 80,882 two-wheeler drivers and 19,879 pillion riders for not wearing helmets.
'The decision to start the drive was taken at a departmental meeting, as a large number of two-wheeler drivers are not obeying traffic rules, especially during the night when the presence of traffic policemen on the roads is less,' said D.P. Verma, deputy commissioner of police (Traffic).
'On the first day of the drive, we will concentrate on the roads leading to areas where ministers and other dignitaries stay and in some pockets of south Delhi,' said Verma.
'It is difficult to carry out checks simultaneously in all the places, so we are concentrating on specific areas at a time,' he explained.
'We have also asked police stations to assist us by keeping a check on the by-lanes of their respective areas so that traffic offenders are not able to run away using these roads,' Verma said.
He said the use of improper helmets was the reason behind the high number of fatal accidents. 'People buy low priced helmets that do not protect,' he said, adding that some drivers did not wear helmets at all.
Verma said the traffic police would not only prosecute the offenders but also educate them about traffic rules so that they did not repeat their mistakes.
Officials said Sikhs who wear 'patka' and not turbans while driving would also be prosecuted. Only Sikhs wearing turbans will be exempted.
