London, May 28 - Miss Kazakhstan Gauhkar Rakhmetalieva defends the mockumentary 'Borat', criticised as an unfair smear against the country, saying it was 'only a joke' and gave the nation much needed publicity.

Dailnysnack.com reports that Rakhmetalieva is in Mexico to compete in the Miss Universe beauty pageant and said her government will release its own film, which shows the country's positive side.

She said: 'In the end we have to understand that it was only a joke. The advantage is that now our country is world famous. As people are looking toward us, we have the opportunity to show how we really are - a modern country with infrastructure and a very developed culture.'
