Auto thief dies in police custody in Ghaziabad

Ghaziabad, June 15 - An auto thief, reportedly picked up for questioning in connection with a missing vehicle, died in police custody in Uttar Pradesh's Ghaziabad town, police said Saturday.

Shakeel, a resident of Dasna in Ghaziabad district, succumbed to injuries sustained earlier while under treatment at a hospital in Ghaziabad around 1 a.m. Saturday, police said.

On a complaint from the victim's father, an FIR - has been registered against eight police personnel. All eight have been suspended and a departmental inquiry has been ordered, Senior Superintendent of Police Nitin Tiwari said.

Superintendent of Police - Jagdish Sharma has been named inquiry officer in the case.

In addition to the departmental inquiry, a magisterial inquiry has also been ordered by the district magistrate, Tiwari said.
