Bhopal, July 14 - Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan has urged Prime Minister Manmohan Singh to ensure that Class X social science textbook replaces the term '1857 Mutiny' with India's First War of Independence.

'Chouhan, at a meeting called by the prime minister at his residence in New Delhi Thursday, regretted that CBSE syllabus still uses the term 'Mutiny',' said a statement by chief minister's office here.

Members of the cabinet, senior members of political parties, chief ministers, governors, historians and intellectuals attended the meeting, organised to plan 150th anniversary celebrations of the 1857 War of Indian Independence.

Chouhan also requested Manmohan Singh to start a stipend scheme for descendants of the freedom fighters of the 1857 war.

The chief minister stressed that textbooks should be used for spreading awareness about India's struggle for independence and the sacrifices made by freedom fighters like Rani Laxmibai of Jhansi, Rani Avantibai of Ramgarh, Raja Bhaktbali of Shahgarh, Raja Shankar Shah of Jabalpur and Raghunath Shah.
